Twitter and the rest of the social mediasphere erupted this week when OVO's own PARTYNETDOOR took it upon himself to share a picture with R&B singer Kehlani, the (ex, I'm assuming) girlfriend of Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving.
I would attempt to break down the situation, but it got messy before it even got started with a suicide attempt, involvement from Chris Brown, and Kyrie Irving dropping 31 in a loss to the Houston Rockets that same day.
I sat down with Beam House Records general Scotty Banx to get his take on the situation with his latest single "Girls Like You," and to see if he had any worthwhile relationship stories himself.
Q: What inspired this song? I know you said you've had this song for a while and the whole Kyrie Irving thing made you want to drop it, seeing now as the perfect time?
A: Really what inspired the song was all the bullshit men have to go through on social media everyday. All day long I'm seeing memes saying things like "all men are dogs" or girls whining about getting their heart broken for the 83rd time, but I know those girls personally and I know that they're out here running around being worse than any guy I know. The fact that they get away with it just because of society's view on things was killing me though, so I wrote a song based on a few different girls I knew. The song was really sitting in the vault because I couldn't come up with any eye catching cover art for it, but since this was a hot topic I knew I had to move ASAP before anyone else did. A lot of people in my corner were saying not to use that as the cover because of the suicide attempt, but it's people out here walking around with jesus on a chain. You think I care about that picture?
Q: What do you think about the whole Kyrie Irving situation?
A: It's unfortunate man, it really is. It's wild how a girl will write an emotional paragraph about someone helping her get out of a "dark place" or whatever, only to cheat on him and end up right back in that "dark place" when she gets caught. I've been both guys in this situation before, but I know right from wrong. Like, you spend all your life saying you need Prince Charming, he comes along and you like it for a while, but I'm only hitting your phone when I feel its convenient for me and you're glued to me. Why? It's weird. I've also been the guy that got left after helping somebody get out of a "dark place" it's just a learning experience man. Never be somebody's umbrella when it rains, they won't need you when the sun comes back.
Q: You see what Chris Brown has been doing on social media? What do you think about it?
A: I know the politically correct thing for me to say is "oh he should be more sensitive. We're at a time where cyber bullying is at an all-time high. Kids look up to you bro." But, honestly, I agree 100 percent with him. How do you fail at suicide? How do you put a gun to your head and miss? Don't get me wrong, suicide is a serious issue. I'm not downplaying that at all. Depression is a real and unfortunate thing. But saying "suicide attempt" is like saying "finger snapping attempt;" it's a way to get that done if you really want to.
Q: How do you feel about her attempted suicide?
A: It's unfortunate, but that's just a way to keep the heat off. Just like Chris said, I bet she wasn't suicidal when she was laid up.
Q: What do you think PND's goal was with all of this?
A: I guess to show that no matter what happens she ain't going nowhere. No matter how much better the next man treats her, thats his. I've been that guy before. Karma is real though, very real indeed.
Q: Give us your craziest relationship story.
A: Man...so my freshman year of college, I had a girl back home and a girl up in Delaware at school that I was messing with. I figured I'd be smooth sailing as long as I never put anything on social media. The only problem was a dude I went to high school with was supposed to transfer to the school I was at so he ended up "talking" to a girl that lived down the hall from me on Twitter. He was also flirting with the girl I had back home and they ended up doing the whole "best friend" bullshit. So he gets me caught up by getting the girl he was messing with at my school to tell the girl I had back home that I always had the other girl in my room one night while they were on the phone. That same night around like 1 a.m. I hear banging on my door at the same time my phone starts ringing. It was the side chick at the door and the main chick on the phone. Shit was tragic bro. They both start making threats to each other saying they'll drive state to state to fight each other. Next thing you know, dude that got me caught up ended up getting caught up because the chick I had back home started exposing him on twitter when the girl he was messing with at school tried to join my side chick in an argument. He pulled a D'angelo Russell move and it back fired on his ol' bitch ass. As I said earlier, karma is real man.
