It's the best time of the month once again. That's right, it time for the good people of The Demo Tape to let you know what we've been listening to since last month. Brandon, Refiloe, Tex, and myself have a lot of variety this month so hopefully your next favorite song is somehwere on this list.
Brandon (@BMoreThanGreat)
PnB Rock “Ballin” - I’m not going to lie, this song is probably getting the most bump on the aux cord right now. PnB is coming on very strong and I feel like he’s only going to take off from here. He has a distinct sound and the track, itself, is just so catchy. And of course, the beat is fire. Dudes is crazy talented and he definitely has a banger with this one.
YBS Skola “Getting Money”- Anybody who knows me, knows that I love to show love to the Baltimore artists. This track right here is hot in the city right now. Oftentimes, it’s easy to lose motivation to do what you need to do, but Skola gets you hype for just about anything with this song. Hopefully, we can get some more heat from the young gun.
Future “Lie to Me” - I swear this man Future never gets tired. It’s crazy the amount of quality music he’s putting together, especially considering the volume he’s dropping it at in such a short period of time. This is easily one of my favorite track on EVOL. I love the smooth joints that Future drops. In fact, they tend to be the songs I enjoy the most from him. Hendrix nevers disappoints me man.
Kanye West “Father Stretch My Hands Part 1 & 2” - As much a people hate on Kanye and as much disdain I have for the nickname ‘Yeezus,’ homeboy is one of the greatest artists of our generation. The Life of Pablo is an overall great project and this is one of the lead tracks off the album. I’m not a huge Kid Cudi fan, but he murders Pt. 1. Then, the switch up on Pt. 2 just makes the track legendary in my opinion.
Rockie Fresh feat. Ed Sheeran “Are You With Me?” - This song isn’t the most popular, but I love it. It features two artists who continue to fly under the radar. Rockie is a guy with a major label deal, but still gets overlooked. Ed Sheeran is now a Grammy-award winner and is simply that dude. I’m glad they got the opportunity to hook up for such an amazing track. If you haven’t heard it, please check it out.
Refiloe
MarshalBoys "Namba Namba" (EmoBoys Remix) - Great jazzy feel + great South African house= this flawless track. This song makes me feel smart, loyal, beautiful, and appreciated. The song has no words and frankly, I have no words that could do it justice.
Pete Rock & CL Smooth "Take You There" - The main thing with this song is the chorus. I enjoy rap songs with choruses or hooks sung by soulful women. Nowadays rappers often song their own hooks, which in some cases is fine. But the 90s was a time when more rappers featured a woman whose voice balanced theirs. 90s Rap has a special place in my heart but I did not hear this song until Pandora blessed me some time last week. I instantly added this song to every music app I have. Lyricism *check*, tight beat *check*, knowledge and uplifting words for The People *check*. I felt nostalgic hearing this song as it reminds me of the beauty of the 90s so I play it as often as I can.If you hear this song and don't bounce your shoulders to the beat you're stubborn.
ZHU "Cocaine Model" - "Cocaine Model" is a model: that is to say it models everything a song of its genre should be. I had not played it for months but recently played it in December and it's been on repeat ever since.
Lianne La Havas "Elusive" - Let there be no question, I am a huge fan of La Havas. "Elusive" is a drastically improved version of British Folk-Rock singer Scott Matthews' track. I fell in love with this song when I first heard it at her concert in November of 2012. This song is pure poetry- one of the most descriptive songs I've ever heard. Though La Havas didn't write it, her voice brings every word to life. The line "defiantly real there's nothing fake" speaks volumes to me as authenticity is something I truly value. In fact my blog and my other social media is called "defiantlyreal" as that is what I aspire to be.
DWYR "S.Y.B.F" - I love house/club music and "S.Y.B.F" is right up my alley. I had it in a playlist but hardly ever heard it. I heard it last week and have played it every night since. I usually play it at night because it gives off the feel of being in the club. If you're broke, play this song to feel like you're in a club.
Tex (@JTexKnows)
Skippa Da Flippa "Same Nigga" - This artist right here is still somewhat unknown, even though he is signed to the same Quality Control label as Migos. The beat sets the tone for this entire track and allows for Skippa to put on display his unique flow. This is an artist who has hella potential but just needs more exposure.
Kanye West feat. The-Dream, Chance the Rapper, Kelly Price & Kirk Franklin "Ultralight Beam" - For anyone who's ever gone to church this track can really hit home. It provides one with that sanctuary and choir type sound. Kanye really went out and got A1 contributions for the entire TLOP project and it was a smart move. This song can actually bring tears to one's eyes. The-Dream provided great vocals on this track as well and not too many people even know it's him on the song.
Majid Jordan "Warm" - Drake found yet another gem to add to the OVO team with this duo here. Their album was absolutely impressive in my eyes and I am proud of the two for their work. This track right here gives listeners the combination of great voice and a nice funky beat that you don't hear every day.
Future "Purple Reign" - As we all know Future has been on an absolute roll with his musical production in the last year or two. He has been putting out albums and mixtapes at an unbelievable clip, which is a joy for his fans. I chose this track because I feel like it is one of the few on Purple Reign that doesn't get that much love and deserves it. Metro Boomin did a fine job on this track of course and one won't be upset for listening to it.
Jacquees feat. Kirko Bangz "T-Shirt & Panties" - I already know for a fact that my fellow TDT member BDJ will be able to appreciate this track since Kirko Bangz is on it. Jacquees is definitely on the rise in the R&B game, and in my eyes he should be included in the next XXL Freshman Class. His Mood mixtape is a very nice project and this song is one that both the fellas and the ladies can show love for. As shown by the track's title we all know what this song is about just by that.

Mac Miller "God Speed" - Lowkey Mac Miller had one of the best albums of 2015 in GO:OD AM. This track touched me from the minute that it switched over to the voicemail of Mac's brother hoping that he was alright. The whole I thought'd I'd be in a better place by now idea of this song is relatable to all of us. Not to get too deep, but as a kid I thought that I would be greater than I am today. I thought I would know how to manage my time better by this age, I thought that I would be able so show people that I care about them better too. I definelty didn't envision myself as a broke college student still putting in crazy amounts of work. That's life though.
Future "Blow a Bag" - I feel that "Blow a Bag" is one of Future's more meaniningful songs. When you listen to it there are some truly qoutable lines like "Money'll change a nigga/Fame'll change a bitch". The line "If my Grandad was living, I know he'd be proud of me" is another one that I find myself repeating over and over too. I respect how the second verse acts as a thank you to Future's longtime friends with the rapper mentioning Metro Boomin, and Young Scooter.
Plies "Ritz Carlton" - Sometimes you hear a song so much that you end up growing to like it. It's amazing to me that Plies has a song that's recieving radio play in 2016. It feels like it's been decades since we've heard any relevant music from Plies so hearing from a guy that was instrumental in my middle school days is cool. Hopefully, T-Pain can follow suit.
Kanye West feat. Desiigner "Freestyle 4" - This was the first song I heard from The Life of Pablo and I thought it was absolutely ridiculous (I thought Desiigner was Future too big I digress). After the first listen I wanted to hear it again. Then again. Then again. Eventually, I listened to "Freestyle 4" enough times for it to warrant a place in my playlist.
Big Sean "What a Year" feat. Pharrell and Detail - Bar for bar I'd be willing to argue that this is the one of Big Sean's best performances. May be one of the best songs of all time forreal...*MJ shrugs*
